The sarbojanin (community) Durga Puja on Rasbehari Avenue opposite Deshapriya Park has been running since 1938, making it one of the older community pujas in South Kolkata. For most of its history it drew a steady local crowd; that changed in 2015, when the organisers built a Durga idol 88 feet tall — at the time, the tallest Durga idol ever made. The scale of the project (reported at around ₹2.5 crore, with cement major Star Cement contributing roughly ₹5 crore in sponsorship) meant the sculptors, led by Mintu Pal, built it in fibreglass and cement rather than the traditional clay, simply because clay couldn't have held its own weight at that height.
The 88-foot idol went on to be listed in the Limca Book of Records, the Indian Book of Records and the Asia Book of Records, and photos of it circulated widely enough that Amitabh Bachchan himself shared them. The puja leaned into the scale in the years after: a 1,000-armed idol battling a hundred demons in 2016, a Mahishmati-palace pandal inspired by the film Baahubali in 2017, and continued large-scale annual builds since (Jyoti in 2023, Jalchobi in 2025).
