Muhammad Ali Park

Central KolkataFull guideFlagship pandal

A Central Kolkata puja running since 1969 on Chittaranjan Avenue, known for grand architectural-replica pandals — and, since 2019, for a real structural scare underneath the park itself.

The Durga Puja at Muhammad Ali Park, on Chittaranjan Avenue near College Square and Calcutta University, has been organised since 1969. It's built a reputation over the decades as a reliable crowd-puller specifically for its architecture-focused pandals — builds that recreate real monuments and temples in detail, paired with elaborate stretches of lighting across the park.

In 2019, the puja's home ran into an unusual problem: the wall of a British-era underground reservoir beneath the park collapsed, and experts from Jadavpur University subsequently declared the structure unsafe for public gatherings. The organisers were forced to shift that year's celebrations to an adjacent fire station on Central Avenue while repairs to the park were worked out — a rare case of a Kolkata puja's history being shaped by the ground underneath it rather than the pandal above it.
