Suruchi Sangha has run its Durga Puja in the New Alipore area of South Kolkata since 1952, marking its 70th anniversary in 2023 with the theme "Maa Tor Eki Onge Eto Roop" (Mother, you hold so many forms within one body). The club's chief patrons include a West Bengal cabinet minister and the local MLA for Tollygunge.
In 2023 the club took a concrete step on sustainability that set it apart from most Kolkata pujas: it replaced the roughly 350 publicity hoardings it puts up across Kolkata and its suburbs every year — normally printed on vinyl — with versions made of cotton and canvas, using lead-free ink. It's a small but genuinely measurable change, in a festival where plastic and vinyl waste from just this kind of publicity material is a well-documented problem every October.
